Radio Operator
Organizational Context
This role is based in the UNDSS Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Juba, South Sudan, reporting to the UNDSS SOC Supervisor. The position is part of the UNDSS SOC team, providing essential telecommunications support to ensure effective implementation of security procedures, particularly during incidents and emergencies. The role may require shift work and availability on short notice.
Job Purpose
The Radio Operator serves as a SOC Assistant within the UNDSS Security Operations Centre in Juba, South Sudan. The primary purpose is to provide crucial telecommunications support, ensuring the efficient flow of security-related information and the effective implementation of security procedures. This role contributes to the overall security management by monitoring communications, tracking personnel and vehicle movements, and generating timely reports. The position operates within a team environment, requiring minimal supervision and the ability to produce accurate technical outputs, especially during security incidents and emergencies, ensuring 24-hour telecommunications coverage.
Responsibilities
Monitor and manage all radio communications, ensuring 24-hour telecommunications service coverage. Track UN personnel and vehicle movements to enhance security. Coordinate with UNDSS Security Officers and other UNSMS organizations to facilitate efficient information flow according to standard operating procedures. Produce regular and ad hoc reports, including daily radio checks and summaries of security incidents. Provide support and training on telecommunications equipment and procedures, including Security Risk Management Measures. Maintain an inventory of telecommunications equipment, recommend improvements, and ensure operational readiness. Create and maintain essential databases, such as contact lists and warden information, for accurate record-keeping. Adhere to established emergency response processes and procedures to ensure prompt assistance during critical events.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible work experience in radio operations or a related field is required. Experience with UN system or International NGO radio room management/operation is desirable. Technical knowledge and supplemental courses in computer networks and Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) are beneficial.
