The Bureau of Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) within UNDP mobilizes global expertise to shape the future. The Energy for Growth in Africa initiative, part of the UNDP Rome Centre, aims to mobilize climate and energy finance for developing economies, focusing on accelerating clean energy investments and transitions.
Job Purpose
This role serves as the focal point for the UNDP's Energy for Growth in Africa initiative in Mauritania. The primary objective is to identify, develop, and support clean energy projects to unlock financing and contribute to a just, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition. The specialist will provide strategic analysis and technical expertise to ensure interventions align with national development goals and advance regional and global SDG 7 objectives. This position is crucial for integrating energy finance solutions into Mauritania's broader sustainable development agenda and strengthening links with continental and global platforms.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include identifying bankable clean energy projects or those requiring technical assistance, risk mitigation, or blended finance. The role involves aligning the project portfolio with Mauritania's national energy priorities, transition strategy, and the Mission 300 pact, as well as leveraging financing opportunities from multilateral banks, climate funds, and G7 donors. Effective coordination with government institutions, development partners, private investors, and technical experts is essential. The specialist will also contribute to designing and implementing innovative financing mechanisms to scale up sustainable energy solutions, particularly for underserved communities, and explore opportunities in carbon markets and climate finance instruments.
Work Experience
The role requires experience in identifying and developing clean energy projects, understanding financing mechanisms, and engaging with diverse stakeholders. Experience in aligning projects with national energy strategies and securing funding from various sources, including public and private investors, is expected. Familiarity with the African energy sector and sustainable development frameworks is likely beneficial.
