Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the lead UN agency for sustainable development, working to end poverty, inequality, and climate change. In Madagascar, the UNDP's country program (2024-2028) focuses on good governance, economic competitiveness, and sustainable environmental management. This role is part of the UNDP's Accelerator Lab network, a global initiative to identify, experiment with, and scale innovative solutions for development challenges.
Job Purpose
The Exploration Lead will be instrumental in launching and managing activities for the UNDP Madagascar Accelerator Lab. This role involves engaging with local communities, collaborating within global networks, and identifying emerging trends and solutions for development challenges. The purpose is to discover and detect emerging trends, assess their implications for systemic impacts and risks, and explore their potential to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The role will feed into the experimentation portfolio, ensuring alignment with emerging risks and opportunities, and connecting local dynamics to the broader national and international ecosystem, thereby increasing the chances of acceleration. This function will also support the country office's broader development initiatives.
Responsibilities
The Exploration Lead is responsible for horizon scanning and intelligence gathering for the Accelerator Lab. This includes identifying, visualizing, and communicating emerging development trends, data, and technologies, with a focus on marginalized actors and issues. The role involves mapping systemic impacts on the economy, environment, and livelihoods, and identifying new data sources. Responsibilities also include establishing partnerships with private sector entities for data access, demonstrating the utility of new data sources, and creating partnerships for real-time data analysis. The role requires managing data and technology risks, transforming unstructured data into actionable insights, and sharing exploration findings through various channels, including blogs and social media. Collaboration with the global Accelerator Lab network and supporting the development of new initiatives, particularly those creating employment and inclusive growth opportunities, are also key duties.
Work Experience
Required experience includes development programming/policy and social innovation. Demonstrated ability in horizon scanning, data analysis, and visualization is essential. Desirable experience includes social innovation approaches (systems thinking, ethnography, crowdsourcing), partnership building, utilizing diverse data sources (mobile, geospatial, citizen data), future thinking and foresight analysis, and established networks with cutting-edge innovators.
