Organizational Context
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) is a UN entity established in 1949, mandated to assist and protect approximately 5.8 million registered Palestine refugees across Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and Gaza. UNRWA operates as the largest UN program in the Middle East, providing essential services including education, healthcare, and social services, funded primarily by voluntary contributions.
Job Purpose
This role is responsible for operating assigned Agency vehicles safely and efficiently, adhering to all traffic laws and regulations. The driver ensures the security of the vehicle, passengers, and cargo, performing necessary checks and maintenance. The position requires meticulous attention to documentation, including licenses and vehicle permits, and adherence to accident reporting procedures. The driver may also be tasked with specific duties such as VIP transport, operating specialized vehicles like garbage trucks or freight vehicles, or managing passenger welfare on buses, all while upholding UNRWA's operational standards and contributing to its mission.
Responsibilities
Operate assigned Agency vehicles safely and in compliance with traffic laws and regulations. Ensure the safety of the vehicle, passengers, and cargo during transit. Conduct daily vehicle checks, including oil, battery, brakes, and tires, and report any issues to the supervisor. Maintain the cleanliness and good general condition of the vehicle. Adhere to accident reporting procedures and possess knowledge of emergency contacts. Ensure all vehicle documents, licenses, and permits are valid. Manage diplomatic pouch operations, ensuring confidentiality and proper handling. Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking. Perform specialized driving duties, including VIP transport with protocol adherence, operating specialized vehicles (e.g., garbage collection, freight), and managing associated teams and safety protocols. Plan routes and stops for long-distance travel, ensuring passenger safety and welfare.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience driving various types of vehicles is required. A valid driving license for all vehicle types is essential. Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance, inspection, and fault reporting is necessary.
