AFOLU Expert
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development. The Greenhouse Gas Abatement Cost Model (GACMO), developed by UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre, is a tool for projecting greenhouse gas emissions and assessing mitigation options. This role supports the enhancement of the AFOLU component within GACMO.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to improve the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) component of the Greenhouse Gas Abatement Cost Model (GACMO). The role involves updating existing AFOLU mitigation options and their associated technology tables, revising technical and economic parameters using the latest data and methodologies, and developing new AFOLU mitigation options for integration into GACMO. The consultant will also support enhancements to AFOLU activity data and emission factor approaches, ensuring consistency with IPCC guidelines and international accounting standards. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the AFOLU module of GACMO, making it a more robust tool for developing countries in their climate mitigation efforts.
Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities include reviewing and updating existing AFOLU mitigation options and technology tables within the GACMO tool. This involves assessing technical assumptions, activity data requirements, emission factors, carbon stock assumptions, and cost parameters, identifying gaps and outdated information. The role also entails developing new AFOLU mitigation options based on internationally recognized methodologies and the latest scientific evidence, creating detailed technology tables for each. Furthermore, the consultant will support the enhancement of AFOLU activity data and emission factor approaches within GACMO, ensuring alignment with IPCC guidelines and international mitigation accounting standards. The work will culminate in the delivery of various technical reports and notes, including an inception report, review reports, updated tables, and a final summary report.
Work Experience
Requires a minimum of 7 years of professional experience in AFOLU-related climate change mitigation and greenhouse gas accounting. Demonstrated experience with IPCC AFOLU methodologies, national GHG inventories, emission reduction quantification, and climate mitigation planning is essential. Experience supporting climate policy processes (NDCs, LT-LEDS, BURs, NCs, BTRs) and familiarity with GHG projection/modelling tools are highly desirable.
Skills
Expertise in IPCC AFOLU methodologies for GHG emissions accounting, national GHG inventories, emission reduction quantification, and climate mitigation planning. Experience supporting climate policy and transparency processes (e.g., NDCs, LT-LEDS, BTRs). Familiarity with GHG projection/modelling tools and carbon market methodologies (CDM, Article 6) is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills in English.
