Organizational Context

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. The Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm Conventions (BRS Secretariat) aims to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes. This role supports the BRS Secretariat's clearing-house mechanism by translating the Rotterdam Convention website into UN languages.

Job Purpose

This role is to review and revise the automatic English-to-Chinese translation of the Rotterdam Convention website, ensuring accuracy and adherence to official terminology. The contractor will identify and correct translation errors, focusing on legal, scientific, and technical terms, and maintain consistency with United Nations and UNEP standards. The ultimate goal is to produce a high-quality, revised Chinese version of the website content, enhancing the clearing-house mechanism for information exchange. This contributes to the BRS Secretariat's mandate of making crucial environmental information accessible in all UN languages, supporting the objectives of the Basel, Rotterdam, and Stockholm conventions.

Responsibilities

Review and revise the automatic English-to-Chinese translation of the Rotterdam Convention website, providing a MS Word document with track changes. Ensure the revised translation accurately reflects official Rotterdam Convention terminology, legal, scientific, and technical terms, and maintains consistency with United Nations and UNEP vocabulary. Identify and comment on mistranslations that impact meaning or are related to specialized terminology. Verify the accuracy of quotations. Seek clarification from the Information Systems Officer for any text ambiguities. The work involves editing approximately 4,957 words of website content.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in Chinese editing within the United Nations or similar intergovernmental organizations is required. Three years of experience translating or editing documents from English to Chinese for international legal bodies is desirable. Experience with environment-related intergovernmental organizations in Chinese is also desirable.

Skills

Fluency in English and Chinese. Advanced university degree in translation, linguistics, or law. Experience in editing and translation within UN or intergovernmental organizations. Familiarity with UN and UNEP terminology. Ability to identify and correct translation errors, especially in legal, scientific, and technical contexts.
