Organizational Context

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Country Office in Nigeria (CONGA) implements projects to strengthen criminal justice capacities. This role, based in Abuja, supports the Division for Operations and reports to the UNODC Representative for Nigeria, with substantive guidance from the Nigeria Counter-Terrorism Project Coordinator and supervision from UNODC headquarters in Vienna.

Job Purpose

This role provides essential substantive, coordination, and administrative support for project activities in Nigeria, focusing on enhancing the criminal justice system's ability to prevent and counter terrorism. The incumbent will assist in planning and implementing technical assistance and capacity-building initiatives, manage project logistics, support proposal development, and contribute to reporting and data analysis. The position aims to strengthen national capacities against terrorism and violent extremism, facilitating effective project delivery and coordination with various stakeholders, including international partners and Member States.

Responsibilities

The Assistant Programme Officer will support the planning and implementation of technical and capacity-building activities aimed at strengthening criminal justice counterparts' ability to prevent and counter terrorism and violent extremism. Key duties include providing administrative and logistical support for project implementation, assisting with procurement, recruitment, and budget tracking, and liaising with relevant parties. The role involves supporting the delivery of technical presentations, contributing to project proposal development and reporting, and assisting in data collection and analysis for informed decision-making. Coordination with UNODC offices, other international organizations, and Member States is crucial, alongside preparing various written outputs and supporting programmatic tasks for office functioning.

Work Experience

While not required for candidates with an advanced degree, two years of relevant experience in developing and implementing counter-terrorism capacity-building projects is desirable. Experience with EU-funded projects, UN system work, and data analytics is also beneficial.
