Urban Development, Housing and Solid Waste Management Intern
Organizational Context
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) promotes sustainable urban development globally. In Angola, UN-Habitat is strengthening its presence to support the development of urban and housing policies, spatial planning, and waste management, aligning with national development goals and the New Urban Agenda. This internship is based in Luanda, a rapidly growing urban center.
Job Purpose
This internship aims to support UN-Habitat's initiatives in Angola, focusing on sustainable urbanization, housing, and solid waste management. The intern will contribute to the operationalization of UN-Habitat's country program, assisting in developing urban and housing policies, spatial planning frameworks, and waste management strategies. The role supports UN-Habitat's mandate to promote inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, contributing to the reduction of inequality and poverty in Angola, particularly in the context of rapid urbanization in Luanda.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist in identifying community opportunities and translating them into project concepts, supporting resource mobilization and partner engagement. Key duties include preparing for meetings with partners and donors, developing and disseminating communication materials, and supporting the general implementation of UN-Habitat's portfolio within UN Cooperation Frameworks. The role involves tracking key indicators, monitoring reports, and providing feedback. Additionally, the intern will assist in preparing technical designs, supporting field work for urban development and housing projects, collecting and analyzing data, and engaging with website and social media platforms. Specific focus will be placed on supporting sustainable solid waste management practices, including community-based recycling and circular economy initiatives, data collection on waste streams, and contributing to reports and awareness campaigns.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this internship. However, a field of study closely related to urban development, housing, spatial planning, environment, or climate change risk management is essential. Familiarity with concepts like circular economy, recycling, and sustainable waste disposal is desirable. Experience in preparing presentations and strong organizational and planning skills are beneficial.
