The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) seeks an intern for the Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch within the Division on International Trade and Commodities. Job Purpose
This internship aims to provide students and recent graduates with hands-on experience in international trade and sustainable development. The intern will support research, data analysis, and communication efforts related to circular economy, trade, and environmental issues. The role contributes to UNCTAD's mandate of assisting developing countries in their trade and development efforts, fostering a deeper understanding of global economic challenges and solutions. The intern will gain exposure to policy analysis, intergovernmental processes, and technical cooperation activities, enhancing their educational background and professional development.
Responsibilities
Conduct research and summarize scientific, technical, and policy evidence on circular economy, sustainable materials, chemicals, plastics, and waste. Compile, clean, and analyze quantitative data using Python or R, documenting methodologies for reproducibility. Support the analysis of materials, chemicals, and plastics in traded products and value chains, including regulatory aspects and waste streams. Provide analytical and data inputs on standards, traceability, and market access for developing countries. Prepare briefing notes, presentations, and speeches translating technical information for non-specialist audiences. Assist in organizing program events, briefings, and training sessions, including stakeholder coordination and follow-up. Monitor relevant UNCTAD and intergovernmental processes, preparing meeting summaries and related materials. Translate complex scientific and policy content into accessible language for communication materials.
Work Experience
No professional work experience is required for this internship. However, demonstrated experience using Python or R for scientific data handling and environmental modeling is highly desirable. The ability to interpret and summarize scientific literature and strong analytical writing skills are also beneficial.
