Special Assistant, Political Affairs
Organizational Context
This position is within the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVMC), specifically in the office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG). The incumbent reports directly to the SRSG, playing a key role in supporting the Mission's mandate and the Colombian peace process.
Job Purpose
The Special Assistant, Political Affairs provides critical specialized advice and technical support to the SRSG and the Principal Political Affairs Officer. This involves identifying, analyzing, and monitoring political developments related to the Mission's mandate and the Colombian peace process. The role ensures the SRSG is informed of all significant matters, assists in formulating responses, and manages correspondence and documentation, including reports to the Security Council. The position also involves extensive liaison with various stakeholders, coordination of meetings and workshops, and managing the transition towards UN agency-led commitments, including donor relations and post-mission activities.
Responsibilities
Key duties include providing specialized advice and technical support on political developments and emerging issues concerning the Mission's mandate and the peace process. The role involves managing the SRSG's correspondence, drafting official documents, and liaising with state institutions, political parties, civil society, and religious actors. Responsibilities also encompass planning and managing conferences, meetings, and workshops. Furthermore, the Special Assistant coordinates transition activities towards UN agency-led commitments, liaises with donors and international organizations for synergy, and supervises, mentors, and evaluates staff, participating in recruitment processes.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in political affairs, diplomacy, or conflict resolution is required. Extensive experience in political outreach, analysis, advice, and reporting is essential. Experience in disarmament, peace and security, development management, or conflict resolution is also necessary. Experience with Latin American issues, particularly peace processes, is required. Experience in a special political or peacekeeping mission, or with international organizations in conflict/post-conflict settings, is desirable.
