Consultant to Assess Laws Received from Arab Countries under the Gender Justice and the Law Initiative
Organizational Context
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Centre for Women seeks a consultant to support its Gender Justice and the Law Initiative. This role will provide research and analytical support for planned outputs, including knowledge products and meetings, contributing to the Centre's objectives in promoting gender equality and legal reform in the region.
Job Purpose
The consultant will provide critical research and analytical support to the ESCWA Centre for Women's Gender Justice and the Law Initiative. This involves conducting in-depth legal assessments of legislative amendments in Arab countries, evaluating their alignment with international standards such as CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action. The role will contribute to building a robust knowledge base on emerging legal issues, identifying policy response options, and developing recommendations for legal reform. The consultant will also be involved in drafting technical papers, preparing country-specific reports, and contributing to events and training activities aimed at advancing gender justice through legal frameworks in member states.
Responsibilities
Conduct legal analyses of new legislative amendments in Arab countries, assessing their alignment with international gender justice standards. Draft technical papers evaluating national legislation against instruments like CEDAW and the Beijing Platform for Action. Develop legal reform recommendations for member states, identifying gaps and proposing amendments. Prepare and update country-specific legislative assessments and coding. Justify proposed revisions to legal frameworks. Contribute to narrative reports and presentations on legislative changes and opportunities. Provide content for country summary reports and coordinate with design teams. Support the planning and organization of events for the Gender Justice and the Law Initiative. Conduct training seminars and workshops for government officials and stakeholders. Undertake other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in socio-economic development, legal and policy analysis, or sociological research is required. Specific research experience on gender-related issues is essential. Experience working within the Arab region is desirable.
