Financial Engineering, Structuring and Modelling Expert - Nigeria’s NDC 3.0 Investment Pipeline
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads the global NDC Act & Invest project, funded by IKI and the NDC Partnership. This project supports countries in translating their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs 3.0) into actionable, investable plans. The project operates through three workstreams: fostering ambition, piloting policy alignment, and enhancing NDC investability. The NDC Act & Invest team, based in Paris, manages the project globally and coordinates with partners like GIZ, UNDP, UNFCCC, MDBs, DFIs, and the private sector.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for supporting Nigeria's NDC 3.0 implementation by enhancing the investability of its agriculture and transport sectors. The expert will conduct a financing landscape analysis, screen projects, develop bespoke financial models, and design de-risking and structuring options for priority projects. The purpose is to bridge the significant climate investment gap in Nigeria by creating investor-ready propositions, facilitating investor engagement, and transferring financial modelling methodologies to national counterparts. This directly contributes to accelerating progress towards Nigeria's climate targets and the global 1.5°C goal by making climate commitments tangible and fundable.
Responsibilities
The expert will deliver a comprehensive financing landscape and pathway analysis for Nigeria's agriculture and transport NDC 3.0 components. This includes screening candidate projects for investability, developing detailed financial models for shortlisted projects, and designing appropriate structuring and de-risking options. Responsibilities also encompass creating investor-ready documentation, such as teasers and investment memoranda, and mapping potential financiers. The role involves documenting investor engagement and facilitating knowledge transfer of financial models and methodologies to the National Climate Change Council (NCCC) and relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The expert will coordinate with sectoral specialists to consolidate inputs into a coherent investment pipeline and financing package.
Work Experience
A minimum of twelve years of experience is required in project finance, infrastructure or climate finance, investment banking, development finance, or transaction advisory, preferably in emerging markets. Demonstrated experience in building project-level financial models and structuring transactions across the capital stack is essential. Strong knowledge of climate finance instruments and proven experience preparing investor-facing documentation and engaging with various financial institutions are also necessary.
Skills
Advanced proficiency in Excel-based financial modelling; MS Office and data visualization tools. Expertise in project finance, investment appraisal, risk analysis, and structuring methodologies. Strong analytical and drafting skills for investment-grade documents. Ability to design and facilitate technical working sessions and investor engagements. Experience in designing gender-responsive and inclusive financing approaches is an advantage.
