Organizational Context

This position is within the Political Affairs Service of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in Kabul. The driver supports the Political Affairs Service/Political Pillar by providing essential driving services. The role reports to the Special Assistant, Programme Management, and the Chief of Transport.

Job Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to provide safe and reliable transportation services for authorized personnel and the delivery of official items within UNAMA, Kabul. This includes transporting documents, parcels, and personnel, meeting officials at the airport, and performing VIP duties. The driver is also responsible for the daily maintenance and cleanliness of assigned vehicles, ensuring they are in good working order. This role contributes to the operational efficiency of the Political Affairs Service by ensuring timely and secure movement of people and goods, and by maintaining vehicle readiness.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include driving vehicles safely for authorized personnel and VIPs, and performing standby duties. The role involves collecting and delivering mail, documents, and parcels between offices and institutions, as well as making minor purchases and collecting urgent items from local suppliers. The driver will also handle customs clearance for goods and ensure timely payments. Essential duties include performing daily vehicle maintenance, checking fluids, brakes, and tires, conducting minor repairs, and arranging for further servicing. The driver must maintain accurate logs for fuel consumption and maintenance, and follow all procedures in case of an accident. Assistance may be provided to the workshop for vehicle preparation for field trips.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of experience as a driver with a proven safe driving record is required. Experience driving armored vehicles is also required. Experience with the United Nations system or similar international organizations, and familiarity with driving various vehicle makes and models, are desirable.
