Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of the UN Secretariat's Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO), support countries in achieving development priorities and the SDGs. This role is within the UN RCO in Algiers, Algeria, reporting to the Head of RCO. The office is recalibrated to support the UN 2.0 shift, focusing on data, digital, innovation, and a mission-driven culture.
Job Purpose
The Economist provides substantive economic analysis and evidence-based advice on sustainable development, economic transformation, and SDG financing to the Resident Coordinator (RC) and UN Country Team (UNCT). This involves researching and analyzing economic and social data, identifying trends, and developing policy options to accelerate SDG progress. The role supports the implementation of global guidelines, contributes to integrated SDG analysis, and advises on fiscal space, domestic resource mobilization, and innovative financing approaches. The Economist also analyzes the private sector's role in sustainable development and supports UNCT initiatives like Integrated National Financing Frameworks (INFFs), ensuring alignment with UN 2.0 capabilities and corporate priorities.
Responsibilities
The Economist's primary responsibilities include providing economic analysis and advice on sustainable development, economic transformation, and SDG financing. This involves researching and analyzing economic and social data, identifying trends, and developing policy options for the RC and UNCT. The role supports the implementation of global guidelines, integrated SDG analysis, and advises on fiscal space, resource mobilization, and innovative financing. The Economist will also analyze the private sector's role in sustainable development, support UNCT initiatives like INFFs, and contribute economic analysis to the UN sustainable development programming cycle (CCA, UNSDCF). Additionally, the role involves supporting partnerships and engagement with national counterparts and stakeholders, facilitating information sharing, and contributing to knowledge management and learning on economic transformation and SDG financing.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressive experience in economic research, analysis, macroeconomic/socioeconomic policy, or applied/development economics is required. Experience in conducting economic/policy analysis and translating data into policy options is essential. Experience in SDG financing, development finance, public finance, or innovative financing approaches is desirable.
