The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, setting the environmental agenda and promoting sustainable development. The UNEP Vienna Programme Office manages environmental projects in the Western Balkans, working with diverse partners. This role is based in Sarajevo, supporting UNEP's activities in the region.

Job Purpose

This role serves to coordinate and manage multiple complementary environmental projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Western Balkans, focusing on waste, land pollution, air quality, biodiversity, and climate change. The purpose is to ensure project alignment with UNEP standards and national priorities, provide expert technical advice, and facilitate the development of actionable policies and guidelines. The role contributes to enhancing environmental governance, promoting intersectoral integration, and supporting evidence-based decision-making through effective project implementation, monitoring, and knowledge dissemination, ultimately strengthening environmental resilience and sustainability in the region.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and manage diverse environmental projects including waste management, air quality, biodiversity, and climate platforms, ensuring alignment with UNEP standards and donor requirements. Develop detailed work plans, oversee socio-economic analyses, and manage national and regional programmes. Provide technical guidance on environmental mainstreaming, waste/fire management, and chemicals governance. Conduct risk assessments and feasibility studies, and advise on policy frameworks. Prepare policy briefs, roadmaps, and technical guidelines for stakeholders. Track project implementation against results frameworks and prepare semi-annual and final reports. Support independent evaluations, document lessons learned, and draft sustainability strategies. Engage with government institutions, civil society, and international partners to foster collaboration and promote regional cooperation on environmental issues.

Work Experience

A minimum of three years of professional experience in designing and implementing environmental projects related to pollution, biodiversity, and climate change is required. Two years of experience supporting multilateral environmental agreements and internationally funded projects in Bosnia and Herzegovina/Western Balkans is desirable. Experience managing complex projects in sensitive environments and engaging with donors and stakeholders is also desirable.
