Organizational Context

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in North Macedonia is implementing a GEF6 project focused on Sustainable Land Management (SLM). This project aims to reduce land degradation in mountainous regions by strengthening national policies, institutional capacity, and implementing sustainable practices. The role supports the UNEP Vienna Programme Office in executing this initiative.

Job Purpose

The purpose of this role is to coordinate and implement day-to-day project activities for the GEF6 SLM project in North Macedonia. This involves managing project partners, developing terms of reference, monitoring progress, and ensuring timely delivery of outputs. The role contributes to strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, building capacity for SLM, and implementing sustainable land and forest management practices in pilot sites. It also involves coordinating reporting, stakeholder engagement, and contributing to knowledge management and future project proposals.

Responsibilities

Coordinate and implement all aspects of the GEF6 project activities, focusing on natural resource management assessment, planning, and evaluation. Manage registration and due diligence for project partners. Develop Terms of Reference (TORs) for project activities and draft agreements. Monitor partner work against signed agreements and coordinate the production of project outputs. Provide technical input on project deliverables and draft guidelines for reforestation/afforestation. Liaise with government institutions, municipalities, and experts for pilot site selection and implementation of SLM/SFM practices. Contribute to knowledge management products and promote the project. Coordinate daily duties, ensure timely and accurate technical, progress, and financial reporting. Organize Steering Committee meetings and prepare reports. Coordinate the project monitoring and evaluation plan and contribute to new project proposals.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in natural resource management and related project implementation or management is required. Experience in leadership, negotiation, and in-depth project management knowledge is essential. Experience in land and forestry management, technical skills in environment/forestry/agriculture, and working with international organizations are desirable.
