Information Officer
Organizational Context
The Department of Global Communications informs the public and Member States through global networks and Information Centres. This role is located within the United Nations Information Service (UNIS) Nairobi, part of the Outreach Division. UNIS Nairobi promotes UN aims in Kenya, Uganda, and Seychelles, bringing the UN closer to the people it serves and supporting UNON's Director-General.
Job Purpose
This role serves as the Deputy Director of UNIS Nairobi, responsible for leading complex communications campaigns, providing expert advice on public affairs, and developing strategic partnerships. The incumbent will create diverse communication products, serve as a liaison to media and stakeholders, and represent the UN at meetings and events. Key functions include building information networks, developing outreach activities, assisting in the service's operations, and potentially managing and mentoring staff. The role also involves analyzing data to support planning and decision-making, ensuring effective communication of the UN's work to local audiences and promoting public understanding and support for UN objectives.
Responsibilities
Lead the strategy, planning, development, and implementation of complex communications campaigns and public information programs. Provide expert advice on public affairs, anticipate and resolve communication issues, and ensure information integrity. Develop strategic partnerships with key constituencies, acting as a spokesperson and liaison to media, government, and other organizations. Oversee the creation of diverse communication products, including crisis communications and compelling narratives about the UN's work. Evaluate the impact of communications activities and report on trends. Represent the UN at meetings, conferences, and public events, organizing media coverage and outreach activities. Assist in the daily operations of the service, including coordination, policy dissemination, and administrative support. May coordinate and mentor public information staff. Analyze data to identify trends and provide insights for data-driven planning and reporting.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressive experience in public information, journalism, or international relations is required, including three years of supervisory experience within the UN or a comparable organization. Four years of experience in developing and implementing international communications strategies and products are necessary. Experience in communicating complex matters to diverse audiences and engaging stakeholders is also required. Knowledge of digital media platforms and risks to information integrity is essential. Data analytics experience is desirable.
