Senior Field Security Assistant
Organizational Context
This position is based in Mogadishu, Somalia, within the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) under the Integrated Security Workforce. The Senior Field Security Assistant reports directly to the Chief Security Officer, playing a key role in the organization's security operations in the region.
Job Purpose
The Senior Field Security Assistant is responsible for supervising office operations and managing security activities. This includes supporting the Chief Security Officer in coordinating security efforts with other agencies, analyzing security information, and developing contingency plans. The role involves liaising with local authorities to assess security trends, advising staff on potential threats, and ensuring the effectiveness of security measures. Additionally, the position oversees the maintenance of emergency preparedness, including communication systems, evacuation routes, and fire safety equipment, while ensuring timely reporting of security incidents and personnel information.
Responsibilities
Supervise office activities and operations, including budget preparation. Coordinate security efforts with other agencies by maintaining communication lines with security focal points. Analyze security information, evaluate reports, and provide input on security plan effectiveness to the UN Security Management Team. Develop security contingency plans, SOPs, training materials, and conduct security awareness briefings. Liaise with local authorities and police to assess local security conditions, identify trends, and advise staff on potential threats. Review incident reports, ensure appropriate responses, and manage property loss/damage. Maintain fire detection and fighting equipment, evacuation plans, and conduct drills. Evaluate and ensure the availability of emergency evacuation routes and resources. Periodically check and maintain emergency communication systems. Ensure timely submission of security incident reports and personnel lists. Monitor the security situation in coordination with Host Government authorities and inform UNSMS personnel of emerging threats. Establish and maintain relations with host country security agencies, acting as a liaison. Share security updates and receive intelligence briefings. Perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
Ten years of experience in security operations with national or UN security forces is required. This requirement is reduced to eight years for candidates with a first-level university degree. Experience in coordinating with Host Governments, understanding diplomatic protocols, cultural sensitivities, and local governance structures is desirable.
