Internship for a Population Analyst
Organizational Context
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) is a United Nations regional commission established to promote economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean. Its mission includes policy design, monitoring, evaluation, and providing advisory services. This internship is within the Population Division (CELADE) in Santiago, Chile.
Job Purpose
This internship within the Population Division (CELADE) of ECLAC aims to provide practical experience in population and demographic analysis. The intern will support the Division's work by collecting and organizing data, summarizing demographic studies, generating and analyzing population indicators, and processing census and survey microdata. The role also involves assisting in the organization of meetings and conferences. This position contributes to ECLAC's mandate of supporting regional development through evidence-based policy advice and research in population dynamics.
Responsibilities
The intern will be responsible for searching, collecting, and organizing information and reference materials on population issues. This includes reviewing and preparing detailed summaries of population and demographic studies. A key duty is generating and analyzing demographic and population development indicators. The intern will also process census and survey microdata using Redatam and R software to produce sociodemographic indicators and preliminary analyses. Additionally, the role involves supporting the organization and servicing of meetings, workshops, and inter-governmental conferences related to the Division's work, and performing other tasks as assigned by the Division.
Work Experience
Professional work experience is not required for this UN Internship Programme. However, a strong academic background in a relevant field is essential. Knowledge of standard software applications, particularly MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, is necessary. Desirable experience includes proficiency in R and REDATAM, and the ability to draft working documents.
