Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Banjul, Gambia, operates under the UN Secretariat's reformed Development System, supporting national development priorities and SDGs. Led by an empowered Resident Coordinator, it is part of the Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO), which oversees the Resident Coordinator System. The RCO is adapting to the UN 2.0 shift, focusing on data, digital, innovation, and strategic foresight.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UN Resident Coordinator Office (RCO) in Banjul, Gambia, by contributing to the implementation of communications strategies that enhance awareness, engagement, and support for UN priorities. The incumbent will assist in gathering insights from media monitoring, drafting compelling narratives and content for various platforms, and fostering relationships with media outlets. Key contributions include developing communication products, managing digital platforms, supporting outreach campaigns, and ensuring effective communication to advance the UN's mission and the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and SDGs.
Responsibilities
The Associate Communications Officer will contribute to gathering and analyzing media insights to inform communication strategies, and implement these strategies to drive engagement and impact. Responsibilities include drafting narratives and messaging, developing media relations, planning media events, and acting as a spokesperson when required. The role involves creating optimized content for diverse platforms, producing communication products like press releases and reports, and developing strategic partnerships. Additionally, the incumbent will support outreach and advocacy campaigns, manage digital content and social media analytics, contribute to website development, and assist in preparing speeches and talking points for the Resident Coordinator.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Essential experience includes managing digital communication platforms (websites, social media) and content production, as well as media relations with knowledge of the Gambian media landscape. Experience within the UN system or international organizations, graphic design, video production, results communication, data visualization, and event planning are desirable.
