Organizational Context
The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs, operating under the UN Secretariat's reform. This role is within the UN RCO in Djibouti City, Djibouti, reporting to the Head of the RCO. The office is part of a global reform to enhance UN Development System effectiveness, focusing on data, digital innovation, and a mission-driven culture.
Job Purpose
The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Djibouti by implementing communications strategies to raise awareness, drive engagement, and build support for UN priorities and the SDGs. This involves developing compelling narratives and content for various platforms, managing media relations, and coordinating communication campaigns. The role contributes to strengthening the UN's presence and impact at the country level by fostering strategic partnerships, managing information integrity, and advocating for UN initiatives. The position requires maintaining both internal and external relationships to effectively disseminate information and support the overall mission of the UN Development System in achieving the 2030 Agenda.
Responsibilities
The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to the gathering and analysis of media monitoring insights to inform communication strategies, including identifying reputational risks. They will assist in implementing communication strategies to raise awareness and engagement, and draft messaging for various UN initiatives across different platforms. Key duties include media mapping, fostering relationships with media outlets, developing media lines, and coordinating press conferences and events. The role involves creating compelling content, producing communications products like press releases and web stories, and developing communication campaigns. Additionally, the officer will help coordinate strategic communication partnerships, support outreach and advocacy efforts, and contribute to content creation for radio and podcasts. They will also assist in developing and updating communication guidance, preparing reports, staying updated on communication trends and technologies, and ensuring the confidential handling of sensitive information.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Essential experience includes knowledge of risks to information integrity (misinformation, disinformation, hate speech) in challenging environments, skills in data visualization tools, and proficiency in collecting, processing, and analyzing data. Experience with digital media platforms and strategic communications principles is also required. One year of experience in data analytics is desirable.
