Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), part of a global reform, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs under empowered UN Resident Coordinators. The DCO, within the UN Secretariat, oversees the Resident Coordinator System. This role is situated in the UN RCO in Dili, Timor Leste, reporting to the Head of the RCO.

Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator Office in Dili, Timor Leste. This position contributes to implementing communication strategies that enhance awareness, engagement, and support for UN priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals. The role involves developing compelling narratives, creating content for various platforms, managing media relations, and coordinating communication campaigns. By monitoring media, analyzing public narratives, and fostering partnerships, the officer helps build and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and maximizing the impact of UN initiatives. The position also supports reporting efforts and keeps abreast of emerging communication trends and technologies.

Responsibilities

The Associate Communications Officer is responsible for contributing to media monitoring and analysis to inform communication strategies, including identifying reputational risks. They will assist in implementing communication strategies to raise awareness and drive engagement, and draft narratives and messaging for various UN initiatives across different platforms. Responsibilities include media mapping, building relationships with media outlets, and developing media lines, especially for crisis situations. The role involves planning and coordinating press conferences and media events, and potentially acting as a spokesperson. The officer will create compelling content and communications products like press releases and reports, and develop and implement communication campaigns. They will also coordinate strategic communication partnerships, support outreach and advocacy, and contribute to content creation for radio and podcasts. Additionally, the role involves assisting with reporting, staying updated on communication trends, and maintaining confidentiality and data security.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in drafting messages for diverse audiences, developing creative content, and utilizing digital media platforms is desirable. Skills in systematic data collection and analysis are also beneficial, with experience in data analytics being an advantage.
