Organizational Context

The UN Secretariat's Resident Coordinator Offices (RCOs), led by empowered UN Resident Coordinators, support countries in achieving development priorities and SDGs. This role is within the UN RCO in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, reporting to the Head of the RCO, and contributes to the UN's reform efforts focused on data, digital innovation, and a mission-driven culture.

Job Purpose

The Associate Communications Officer plays a crucial role in supporting the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Papua New Guinea. This position contributes to implementing communication strategies that enhance awareness, engagement, and support for UN priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals. The role involves developing compelling narratives, creating content for various platforms, managing media relations, and coordinating communication campaigns. By fostering strategic partnerships and monitoring communication effectiveness, the officer helps advance the UN's mission and objectives at the country level, ensuring alignment with the UN 2.0 shift towards data, digital, and innovation.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include monitoring traditional, social, and digital media to inform communication strategies and identify reputational risks. The role involves implementing communication strategies to drive engagement and impact, drafting narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across multiple channels, and developing media lines, especially for crisis situations. This includes planning and coordinating press conferences and media events, and potentially acting as a spokesperson. The officer will create compelling content and communications products like press releases and reports, develop and implement communication campaigns, and build strategic partnerships. Additionally, responsibilities cover creating content for radio and podcasts, contributing to communication policy and training, assisting with reporting, staying updated on communication trends and technologies, and maintaining data integrity and confidentiality.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in developing and implementing communication strategies is required. Demonstrated knowledge of strategic communication principles and practices is essential. Experience in drafting messages for diverse audiences, developing creative content, utilizing digital media platforms, and conducting data collection and analysis is desirable.
