Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Resident Coordinator System (RCS) has been reformed to enhance the UN Development System's effectiveness in achieving the 2030 Agenda and SDGs. UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCOs), led by empowered Resident Coordinators, support countries in their development priorities. This role is within the UN RCO in Jakarta, Indonesia, reporting to the Head of the RCO.
Job Purpose
This role supports the UN Resident Coordinator (RC) and UN Country Team (UNCT) in Jakarta by providing evidence-based analysis on SDG status and acceleration, focusing on economic transformation, green and just transitions, digital transformation, and SDG financing. The incumbent will advise on policies and strategies to achieve SDGs, leveraging UN system expertise and partnerships. Key contributions include developing policy papers, coordinating flagship reports, analyzing economic trends, and identifying innovative financing mechanisms. The role also involves supporting advocacy efforts, fostering partnerships with national counterparts and international financial institutions, and contributing to the UN's integrated programming cycle to advance the economic transformation agenda and SDG financing in Indonesia.
Responsibilities
The Economist will provide substantive advice to the RC and UNCT on SDG acceleration, economic transformation (including green/just transitions, digital transformation, future of work), and SDG financing. This involves researching and analyzing best practices, providing guidance on global tools, and supporting policy development to achieve SDGs. The role includes coordinating UNCT efforts on SDG acceleration and financing, developing policy papers, and preparing UN flagship reports. Additionally, the Economist will support advocacy for partnerships with government, IFIs, and the private sector, and coordinate the development of integrated SDG programming cycles, including UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks and joint programmes. Knowledge management around SDG acceleration and financing is also a key responsibility, involving promoting collaboration and sharing best practices within the UN system and beyond. Data analysis and visualization for planning and reporting are also required.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic research, and analysis is required. Experience in development cooperation or a related field is essential. Familiarity with development economics, the SDGs, and SDG financing is desirable. Experience in coordinating multi-stakeholder initiatives, strong analytical and writing skills, and proficiency in data analysis software are also beneficial.
