Integrated Energy Systems Consultant
Organizational Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. This role supports the UNEP Buildings and Cooling Unit in developing a global program and partnership focused on Local Energy System Integration for an Affordable & Resilient Energy Transition. The initiative aims to integrate workstreams on cooling, buildings, district energy, transport, and renewables, providing technical assistance to countries on integrated energy planning.
Job Purpose
This consultancy aims to support UNEP's project "Decentralised Energy Systems to Accelerate the Energy Transition." The role will provide technical expertise and design program activities to assist developing countries and cities in shifting towards low-carbon, climate-resilient energy systems. It addresses challenges posed by rising energy demand, urbanization, and the integration of distributed resources. The purpose is to accelerate the transition to modern district energy and sustainable cooling systems, enhancing grid reliability and affordability by leveraging digitalization, renewables, and demand-side flexibility, thereby advancing SDG 7 and SE4All objectives.
Responsibilities
Design program activities and provide technical expertise for an implementation project in Ukraine. Offer technical inputs and partnership support for ongoing and planned projects in various geographies. Conduct research and develop a draft global publication, knowledge products, and case studies. Prepare recommendations for partnership engagement, training materials, and technical content for global events. Provide training and technical guidance to countries and cities, and prepare fundraising proposals. The role involves integrating workstreams on cooling, buildings, district energy, transport, renewables, and energy transition, focusing on city and regional integrated energy planning to address grid pressures and promote sustainable energy solutions.
Work Experience
A minimum of four years of relevant experience is required, with a preference for expertise in urban energy, energy planning, district cooling/heating, smart grids, building energy efficiency, and/or energy policy. Practical experience in energy policy analysis within developing countries is essential.
