Organizational Context

The UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO) support countries in achieving development priorities and the SDGs, operating under the UN Secretariat's Development Operations Coordination Office (DCO). This role is within the UN RCO in Nairobi, Kenya, supporting the UN Country Team (UNCT) and its groups. The position contributes to the UN 2.0 shift, emphasizing data, digital, and innovation.

Job Purpose

The Associate Data Specialist supports the UN Country Team (UNCT) in Nairobi by managing and analyzing data to optimize statistical efficiency and quality. This role is crucial for tracking progress on the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and its indicators. The incumbent will develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and analytics, contributing to evidence-based decision-making and reporting for UNCT reviews. The position also involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including government counterparts and UN entities, to ensure effective data utilization and support capacity-building initiatives in data analytics.

Responsibilities

Implement and maintain databases, data collection systems, and data analytics strategies to enhance statistical efficiency and quality. Analyze and interpret trends using statistical methods, identifying key features and variables from data sources. Acquire, clean, and manage data, while implementing process improvements for data analytics tasks. Develop monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) products for UNSDCF using approved indicators and tools. Collaborate on co-designing digital tools and dashboards with national statistical partners for SDG indicator tracking. Create reports, dashboards, and visualizations to summarize findings and support decision-making. Assist with data collection, initial analysis, and reporting of issues. Contribute to integrating monitoring milestones and evidence streams into data pipelines. Support UNCT statistical capacity-building and provide insights for stakeholder communications. Stay updated on data analytics best practices and technologies. Conduct outcome-level analysis and contribute to training on data analytics and results-based management.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressive experience in data analysis or a related field is required, including knowledge of data manipulation and statistical methods. Proficiency in SQL and programming languages like Python or R is essential. Experience with data life cycle management, data validation, and data visualization tools is desirable.
