Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant
Organizational Context
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Burundi seeks an Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant. This role supports the promotion and protection of Indigenous Peoples' rights, particularly the Batwa community, through engagement with organizations, awareness-raising, and inclusion in development processes.
Job Purpose
The Indigenous Peoples Affairs Assistant will contribute to the OHCHR mandate in Burundi by undertaking research, advocacy, awareness-raising, monitoring, and reporting on Indigenous Peoples' rights. The role involves engaging with Indigenous organizations, supporting capacity-building, and promoting the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human rights initiatives. This position aims to strengthen the realization of Indigenous Peoples' rights and their participation in development processes, aligning with the UN's commitment to leaving no one behind. The assistant will also coordinate events, develop communication materials, and contribute to reporting on achievements and challenges affecting Indigenous Peoples.
Responsibilities
Undertake research, advocacy, awareness-raising, monitoring, and reporting on Indigenous Peoples' rights. Contribute to the OHCHR mandate and programme of work in Burundi. Engage with Indigenous organizations, including women and youth, to support capacity-building and awareness-raising on human rights standards. Provide substantive and technical support for the inclusion of Indigenous Peoples in human rights initiatives. Coordinate arrangements for events such as webinars and workshops. Assist in developing communication and awareness-raising materials. Contribute to reports on achievements, good practices, and issues affecting Indigenous Peoples. Respond to information requests from OHCHR Headquarters. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Work Experience
Five years of relevant professional experience in Indigenous Peoples' rights, human rights, or community development is required. Experience in resource mobilization, communications, awareness-raising, and developing training tools is highly desirable. Membership in the Batwa Indigenous community is also highly desirable.
