Organizational Context

The UN Secretariat's Department of Operational Support, through its Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU), promotes multilingualism and enhances staff language proficiency. This unit offers courses in various languages, including Russian, to UN staff globally. The LCTU operates based on General Assembly mandates and UN policies, aiming to meet the growing demand for language learning by hiring part-time contractors.

Job Purpose

This role serves to support the UN Secretariat's commitment to multilingualism by teaching Russian language courses to staff members. The purpose is to improve their communication skills in Russian, contributing to a more linguistically diverse and effective workforce. The role involves preparing and delivering lessons, assessing student progress, and potentially contributing to the development of new language learning materials and projects. The ultimate goal is to ensure UN staff can effectively communicate in Russian, aligning with organizational objectives and mandates for linguistic balance within the Secretariat.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include preparing and delivering Russian language courses at all levels, utilizing in-person, online, or hybrid modalities. Teachers must assess student performance, provide constructive feedback, and monitor progress. They are expected to utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Moodle and other e-learning tools for course preparation and delivery, maintaining accurate attendance and grading records within the LMS. Additionally, responsibilities may involve developing new Russian language courses and learning materials, including self-study options, and designing assessment materials. Teachers will also construct and grade language proficiency exams according to specific guidelines and may participate in language or communication skills projects, reporting on progress and integrating feedback.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience teaching Russian as a foreign or second language to adults in a multicultural setting is required. This includes at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, or language teacher training. Experience with e-learning tools, LMS, and online collaboration for language teaching is desirable, as is experience in a multicultural environment.
