Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Department of Operational Support, through its Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU), aims to promote linguistic balance and multilingualism. The LCTU offers language courses to UN staff to enhance their communication skills. This role contributes to these objectives by providing part-time English language instruction.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to support the UN Secretariat's mandate for multilingualism and staff language development by delivering high-quality English language and communication skills training. The role involves preparing and facilitating lessons, assessing student progress, and contributing to the development of learning materials. By enhancing staff English proficiency, this position directly contributes to more effective communication within the Secretariat and supports the organization's operational goals. The role also involves utilizing various teaching modalities and technologies to meet diverse learning needs.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include preparing and teaching English language and communication skills courses across all levels using in-person, online, hybrid, or workshop formats. This involves assessing student performance, providing timely feedback, and monitoring progress. The role also entails designing English language learning assessments, applied communicative tasks, and grading proficiency exams according to specific guidelines. Developing new courses and learning materials, potentially using innovative instructional technology, is also a core duty. Additionally, teachers will administer courses within a Learning Management System, maintaining attendance and grading records, and may participate in language project development.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience teaching English as a foreign or second language to adults in a multicultural setting is required. This includes at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, or language teacher training. Experience with e-learning tools, Learning Management Systems, and online collaboration for language teaching is desirable.
