Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Department of Operational Support, through its Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU), promotes linguistic balance and multilingualism. The LCTU offers language courses to staff at UN Headquarters in New York and globally. This role supports the LCTU by hiring additional part-time Spanish teachers to meet demand and contribute to language projects.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to enhance the language proficiency of UN staff by teaching Spanish language and communication skills. The part-time Spanish Teacher will prepare and deliver courses at all levels, utilizing various modalities including in-person, online, and hybrid formats. This includes assessing student performance, providing feedback, and administering courses within a Learning Management System. The role also involves developing new course materials and assessments, contributing to the UN's mandate of promoting multilingualism and effective communication across the Secretariat. The teacher will leverage innovative instructional technology and e-learning tools to facilitate learning and ensure alignment with organizational goals and mandates.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include preparing and teaching Spanish language and communication skills courses at all levels through in-person, online, or hybrid modalities. This involves assessing student performance, providing constructive feedback, and managing course administration within a Learning Management System, including maintaining attendance and grading records. The role also entails developing new Spanish language courses and learning materials, utilizing innovative instructional technology and e-learning tools. Additionally, the teacher will design Spanish language learning assessments and construct/grade proficiency exams according to specific guidelines. Participation in language or communication skills projects, reporting on progress, and integrating feedback are also expected duties.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience teaching Spanish as a foreign/second language to adults in a multicultural setting is required. This includes at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, or language teacher training. Experience with e-learning tools, learning management systems, and online collaboration tools for language teaching is desirable, as is experience in an international, multicultural environment.
