Organizational Context
The UN Secretariat's Department of Operational Support, through its Language and Communications Training Unit (LCTU), promotes linguistic balance and multilingualism. The LCTU offers language courses to staff at UN Headquarters in New York and globally. This role supports the LCTU by hiring additional part-time Chinese language teachers to meet demand.
Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to contribute to the UN Secretariat's mandate of promoting multilingualism and enhancing staff language proficiency. As a part-time Chinese Language Teacher, you will develop, deliver, and assess Chinese language and communication skills courses. This involves preparing and teaching lessons, providing feedback, administering assessments, and potentially contributing to curriculum development and the creation of learning materials. The role aims to help UN staff improve their work-related communication skills in Chinese, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and General Assembly mandates.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include preparing and teaching Chinese language and communication skills courses at all levels through various modalities (in-person, online, hybrid). This involves assessing student performance, providing constructive feedback, and monitoring progress. Teachers will utilize Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodle) and e-learning tools for course preparation and delivery, maintaining accurate attendance and grading records. Additionally, responsibilities may extend to developing new Chinese language courses and learning materials, designing assessments, and constructing/grading language proficiency exams according to specific guidelines. Participation in language projects, such as updating or designing course content, is also expected.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language to adults in a multicultural setting is required. This includes at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, or language teacher training. Experience with e-learning tools, LMS, and online collaboration platforms is desirable.
Skills
Expert level proficiency in Chinese (oral and written); Advanced knowledge of English; Experience in teaching Chinese language and communication skills; Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., Moodle) and e-learning tools; Curriculum development; Language assessment and examination design; Instructional technology utilization.
