Organizational Context

IOM, established in 1951, is the leading UN agency for migration, promoting humane and orderly migration globally. In Greece, under the 'Helios+' project, IOM supports the integration of third-country nationals into the labor market and society. This role operates within the North Aegean region, contributing to employability support, language courses, and social cohesion initiatives.

Job Purpose

The Interpreter (Arabic-French) role is crucial for the successful implementation of IOM's 'Helios+' project in the North Aegean region of Greece. The primary purpose is to facilitate communication and understanding between IOM staff, beneficiaries, and relevant authorities by providing accurate interpretation and translation services. This role directly supports the integration of beneficiaries of international and temporary protection into Greek society by ensuring they can access essential services, participate in employability support, language courses, and vocational training. By bridging language barriers, the interpreter contributes to building trust, enabling effective service delivery, and promoting social cohesion.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include establishing initial contact with beneficiaries, building relationships based on respect and trust, and providing interpretation and cultural mediation. The role involves responding to helpline calls, identifying emerging issues, and reporting them to the Project Assistant. Maintaining positive relations with beneficiaries, stakeholders, and humanitarian actors is essential for effective project implementation and coordination. The interpreter will identify barriers to service access, translate documents and information materials, and assist in mediation activities objectively. Additionally, the position requires providing general assistance to other project staff during activities and performing other assigned duties as needed.

Work Experience

Previous work experience in a similar interpreter or translation role is required. Experience working in a multi-cultural environment is preferred, which will aid in understanding and navigating diverse beneficiary needs and interactions.

Skills

Fluency in English and Greek (oral and written) is required. Fluency in Arabic and French (oral and written) is also essential. Computer literacy in standard applications, strong work ethics, and commitment to humanitarian principles are necessary. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is an advantage.
