Organizational Context
The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN-related agency established in 1951, promotes humane and orderly migration globally. In Bangladesh, IOM is initiating formative qualitative research with UNFPA to investigate the complex links between international labour migration and the high prevalence of child marriage. This role contributes to the Migration Data and Research Unit under the EU-funded REMAP II project.
Job Purpose
This Lead Consultant role is crucial for conducting formative qualitative research in Bangladesh to explore the pathways through which international migration influences child marriage. The purpose is to understand the dynamics of this complex issue, where economic factors related to migration may be driving an increase in child marriage despite national trends. The consultant will manage the entire research process, from design and data collection to analysis and reporting, providing critical insights for policy and programming to address this significant social challenge. The findings will inform interventions aimed at protecting young girls and promoting safe migration.
Responsibilities
The Lead Consultant will oversee the entire research process. This includes designing the study by reviewing existing frameworks, developing a detailed inception report with methodology and tools, and identifying research locations. The consultant will manage and train a data collection team, ensuring ethical standards are maintained, especially when dealing with sensitive topics and vulnerable populations. Responsibilities extend to leading qualitative data collection, including interviews and focus groups. Furthermore, the consultant will lead the transcription and rigorous analysis of qualitative data using thematic, content, and narrative techniques, ensuring data integrity. Finally, the role involves preparing and finalizing a comprehensive research report with actionable recommendations, and presenting key findings to stakeholders.
Work Experience
Required experience includes demonstrable expertise and a strong publication record in migration and/or gender dynamics, particularly child marriage, in Bangladesh or South Asia. Proven experience in managing research teams, extensive qualitative data analysis, and a strong understanding of research ethics with vulnerable populations are essential. Prior experience with UN agencies is highly desirable.
Skills
Excellent analytical and report writing skills in English. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Expertise in qualitative data analysis techniques (thematic, content, narrative) and qualitative analysis software. Proficiency in English and Bengali is required.
