Organizational Context
IOM, a UN-related organization established in 1951, facilitates humane and orderly migration globally. In Greece, IOM is focused on providing targeted care and accommodation services to unaccompanied children (UMC) amidst the ongoing migrant and refugee situation. This role supports these efforts within an assigned accommodation facility.
Job Purpose
This role is crucial for providing essential daily care and support to unaccompanied children (UMC) residing in IOM's accommodation facilities in Greece. The position contributes to IOM's mission of protecting vulnerable migrants by offering tailored interventions and ensuring the well-being of UMC. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Senior Programme Coordinator/Field Office Coordinator and the Child Protection Assistant, directly impacting the safety and care provided to these children.
Responsibilities
The Legal Assistant will provide individual and group legal counseling to UMC regarding their rights, obligations, and legal status procedures. This includes organizing information sessions on asylum, family reunification, and relocation schemes. The role involves supporting UMC through international protection applications, family reunification processes, and residence permit applications. Additionally, the Legal Assistant will refer cases to free legal support programs, maintain accurate records of actions taken, ensure procedural deadlines are met, and communicate with authorities regarding UMC welfare. The position may also require undertaking official travel for legal procedures and performing other assigned duties.
Work Experience
Previous experience in a similar legal assistant role is preferred. Experience within an IOM Emergency Accommodation Facility, direct assistance to migrants or refugees, and working in a multicultural environment are considered advantageous.
Skills
Proficiency in standard software applications (e.g., MS Office) is an asset. The role requires flexibility, conflict resolution capacity, and good communication skills. Willingness to work shifts, holidays, and weekends is necessary. A valid driver's license with at least five years of driving experience is also an advantage.
