Organizational Context
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) at the IAEA leads the global nuclear safety and security programme. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains international standards for radiation protection and waste safety, assisting Member States in their implementation. The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section specifically manages a programme to protect individuals from radiation exposure and provides essential technical services to IAEA staff and experts.
Job Purpose
This role provides crucial technical and operational support to the Radiation Safety Technical Services (RSTS) Laboratory. The primary purpose is to conduct workplace monitoring for IAEA operations, ensuring compliance with radiation safety regulations, particularly at the Seibersdorf site. Additionally, the consultant will contribute to maintaining and enhancing the quality assurance program for laboratory activities. This includes developing and reviewing operational procedures, managing measurement records, and participating in safety assessments, all vital for safeguarding personnel and the environment from radiation exposure.
Responsibilities
The consultant will perform workplace monitoring for both routine operations and non-routine events, including laboratory setup and decommissioning. Responsibilities extend to supporting radiation protection during the testing of technical and fire alarm systems within the laboratories. The role involves handling radioactive materials and sealed sources, as well as maintaining and calibrating monitoring instruments. A key duty is controlling and conducting specialized measurements for alpha-contaminated waste packs prior to disposal from the Nuclear Material Laboratory. Furthermore, the consultant is expected to deliver lectures on radiation protection training.
Work Experience
A minimum of five years of experience is required in radiation measurements and protection. This must include practical, hands-on experience in operational radiation protection within a laboratory setting. Experience adhering to ISO/IEC 17025 quality management requirements is also essential.
Skills
Proficiency in workplace monitoring, radiation protection, laboratory operations, instrument maintenance and calibration, radioactive material handling, quality assurance program implementation, and delivering training lectures. Excellent English communication skills are mandatory.
