Freelance Language Specialists (Translators/Revisers/Editors/Précis-writers)
Organizational Context
The Department of Management provides essential services supporting the IAEA's scientific and technical programmes, acting as a business enabler. The Division of Conference and Document Services facilitates the exchange of nuclear-related information by organizing meetings, issuing documents in multiple languages, and publishing materials. The Language Services Section specifically manages and delivers these linguistic services, upholding the Agency's multilingualism and quality standards.
Job Purpose
This talent pipeline aims to build a roster of freelance language specialists, including translators, revisers, editors, and précis-writers, to support the IAEA's mission. The role involves translating, revising, editing, and drafting various administrative, legal, economic, scientific, and technical texts related to nuclear technology, safety, safeguards, and physics. Specialists will ensure accurate, timely, and stylistically appropriate content, contributing to the effective dissemination of information to Member States and internal stakeholders, and maintaining the Agency's linguistic standards.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include translating and revising a wide range of administrative, legal, economic, scientific, and technical documents into official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish) or from these languages into English. This involves ensuring translations are equivalent in meaning and style to the original content. The role also entails editing documents for consistency, clarity, and terminology, and drafting official records of Policy-Making Organ meetings. Additionally, specialists may research terminology for the IAEA's database and perform other linguistic duties as required, contributing to the overall quality and dissemination of Agency information.
Work Experience
Required experience includes proficiency in Microsoft Office software and IT translation tools such as Trados Studio and Multiterm. Familiarity with the IAEA and its operations is considered an asset. Relevant experience in translating, revising, editing, and/or drafting scientific and technical texts, particularly within the nuclear field or international organizations, is highly desirable.
