Organizational Context

The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, within the IAEA, focuses on Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection." This programme supports Member States in areas like food, agriculture, health, water, environment, and radiation technologies, utilizing nuclear and isotopic techniques. The Division of Physical and Chemical Sciences specifically aids Member States in research and development across nuclear sciences, including radioisotope production and applications.

Job Purpose

This internship aims to provide practical experience in supporting the production of a new IAEA reference material, specifically IAEA-494. The intern will gain hands-on experience in essential processing activities and radiochemical separations. A key aspect of the role involves utilizing alpha-spectrometry to accurately determine the presence and levels of various radionuclides within the reference material. This contribution is vital for ensuring the quality and reliability of the IAEA's reference materials, supporting the broader mission of nuclear science applications for development and environmental protection.

Responsibilities

The intern will actively assist in the processing of reference materials, which includes crucial steps such as drying, sieving, homogenization, and particle size measurement. A significant duty involves supporting radiochemistry separations and employing alpha-spectrometry techniques to identify and quantify specific radionuclides within the samples, including elements like Uranium, Thorium, Plutonium, Americium, Cesium, and Strontium. Additionally, the intern will contribute to particle size measurements and microscopy analyses of the material. The role also entails contributing to the development of a technical report documenting the findings related to the reference material.

Work Experience

While specific years of experience are not mandated for this internship, practical laboratory experience and the ability to undertake analytical tasks are required. Familiarity with radioanalytical or analytical techniques is also a key requirement for successful participation in this role.

Skills

Proficiency in laboratory work and analytical tasks. Knowledge of radioanalytical or analytical techniques. Excellent written and spoken English. Fluency in an additional IAEA official language is an asset.
