Fishery Resources Officer (Climate Change)
Organizational Context
The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) addresses the economic, social, institutional, governance, and policy aspects of FAO's work in fisheries and aquaculture. It focuses on human well-being, food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable trade, while protecting the environment and supporting fishing communities. The Division also manages living aquatic resources, biodiversity, and ecosystem maintenance, promoting responsible fisheries and aquaculture practices and developing relevant technologies. The Global Processes and Institutions Team (NFIPI) within NFI organizes the Committee for Fisheries and integrates aquatic food matters into global policy processes, including climate change negotiations.
Job Purpose
This role supports FAO's Strategic Framework and Blue Transformation Roadmap, focusing on climate change adaptation and mitigation, and building sustainable, resilient aquatic food systems. The Fishery Officer (Climate Change) is crucial for enhancing the sector's climate resilience by integrating climate considerations into global, regional, and national management, policy, and investment processes. The position requires a strong understanding of climate impacts on marine and inland resources, aquatic food systems, and resilience dimensions. It involves translating scientific information into actionable responses, policy advice, resource mobilization, and program support for Member States and partners, contributing to the planning and implementation of divisional programs and services.
Responsibilities
The Fishery Resources Officer (Climate Change) will support FAO's Strategy on Climate Change, track Committee on Fisheries (COFI) requests related to climate change, and plan FAO's contributions to global climate events like the UNFCCC. This includes coordinating resource mobilization efforts for the climate change portfolio and supporting the implementation of the Blue Transformation Roadmap across fisheries and aquaculture value chains. The role involves integrating climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable fisheries management into FAO's technical guidance and policy dialogue. Additionally, the officer will lead the NFI Working Group on Climate Change, liaise with other divisions and partners on climate-related processes, and maintain the NFI climate change project inventory and publications database.
Work Experience
A minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience is required in areas such as fisheries and aquaculture management, climate change analysis, environmental risk assessment, resource mobilization, programme management, or scientific research. Experience in more than one work location or area, particularly in field positions, is desirable.
Skills
Key skills include collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing technical and scientific information on fisheries and climate change. Expertise in marine ecology, environmental risk assessment, climate adaptation and mitigation, Blue Transformation, aquatic food systems, ecosystem-based fisheries management, and biodiversity conservation is essential. Proven experience in preparing scientific documents, organizing large-scale meetings, and providing technical support to national and global institutions is required. Knowledge of FAO's Blue Transformation Roadmap and international climate policy processes is also necessary. Experience with scientific databases and information systems is beneficial.
