Organizational Context

The FAO Forestry Division leads global efforts in sustainable forest management, addressing environmental, social, and economic dimensions to support poverty reduction and food security. It collaborates with nations, civil society, and the private sector on forest policy, conservation, and climate change mitigation/adaptation. The Division disseminates forest resource data and supports REDD+ initiatives through partnerships like the UN-REDD Programme. The Halting Deforestation, Degradation and Emissions Team (HDDE) within the FAO Representation in Indonesia focuses on aligning actions and investments to halt deforestation and emissions, ensuring sustainable agrifood systems and meeting international climate commitments.

Job Purpose

This role supports Indonesia's efforts to reduce emissions from deforestation (REDD+) and enhance its forest monitoring systems, aligning with the UNFCCC's goals to slow, halt, and reverse forest cover and carbon loss. The incumbent will lead technical cooperation in areas such as REDD+ and climate finance, Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), forest and land cover monitoring (including GHG inventories and satellite monitoring), peatland and mangrove management, sustainable commodity supply chains, and forest restoration planning. Support is delivered through various UN-REDD Programme initiatives and other related projects, aiming to catalyze progress on Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and climate change mitigation goals.

Responsibilities

The National Professional Officer will act as the focal point for FAO's Halting Deforestation, Degradation and Emissions (HDDE) and related teams in Indonesia, liaising with the wider forestry project portfolio and serving as a member of the UN-REDD Indonesia interagency team. The role involves being the primary day-to-day contact for Indonesian government partners and stakeholders. Key responsibilities include leading the planning, coordination, implementation, and reporting of FAO's tasks to support the government in forest monitoring and REDD+ initiatives. This includes leading and contributing to technical delivery on REDD+ and forest monitoring assistance, organizing technical sessions, and providing day-to-day coordination for specialist teams. The officer will also participate in UN-REDD and FAO coordination meetings, report on progress and challenges, and provide technical expertise to other relevant forestry projects in Indonesia.

Work Experience

One year of relevant experience in agricultural development and/or project implementation within an area of FAO's activities in the country is required. Experience in REDD+, forest and climate policies, climate finance, and implementing UNFCCC frameworks is highly desirable.

Skills

Essential skills include extensive experience in REDD+, forest and climate policies, climate finance, and UNFCCC frameworks. Proficiency in forest monitoring systems, Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV), greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories, and geospatial/remote sensing technologies is crucial. Knowledge of peatland and mangrove ecosystems, forest restoration, social forestry, and sustainable commodity supply chains is important. Experience in programme/project formulation, implementation, monitoring, and reporting, preferably within international organizations, is required. Strong analytical, drafting, and communication skills, the ability to coordinate with diverse stakeholders, and a good understanding of Indonesia's forestry sector and climate commitments are also necessary.
