Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is dedicated to defeating hunger and achieving food security globally. Operating in over 130 countries with more than 194 member states, FAO strives to ensure regular access to sufficient, high-quality food for all to lead active, healthy lives. The Internship Programme aims to attract motivated young individuals to contribute fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to FAO's work, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and FAO's Strategic Framework for sustainable agri-food systems.

Job Purpose

The Internship Programme offers a valuable learning opportunity for talented young women and men to supplement their academic knowledge with practical work experience within FAO. Interns will be assigned to various fields of work based on their individual profiles and the Organization's needs. This practical assignment allows them to contribute to FAO's mission and the broader UN 2030 Agenda, focusing on transforming agri-food systems for better production, nutrition, environment, and quality of life, ensuring no one is left behind. It's a chance to gain hands-on experience in areas relevant to FAO's mandate.

Responsibilities

Interns will undertake specific functions as detailed in the Terms of Reference (TOR) provided by the hiring office prior to the commencement of their assignment. These responsibilities will be tailored to the intern's academic background and the operational requirements of the department or project. Tasks may include research, data analysis, report writing, supporting project implementation, and contributing to various initiatives aligned with FAO's strategic objectives. The intern is expected to actively engage in assigned duties, demonstrating a commitment to achieving results and contributing to the team's objectives within the scope of the internship.

Work Experience

No specific prior work experience is mandated beyond the educational requirements. However, candidates are expected to be enrolled in or have recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree program in a field relevant to FAO's work. The internship itself serves as the primary work experience opportunity, allowing participants to apply their academic knowledge in a practical setting and gain exposure to international development work.

Skills

Key competencies include Results Focus, Teamwork, Communication, Building Effective Relationships, and Knowledge Sharing and Continuous Improvement. Candidates should possess relevant academic study in fields pertinent to FAO's mission. Adaptability to an international, multicultural environment and strong communication skills are essential. Adherence to FAO's core values of Commitment, Respect for All, and Integrity and Transparency is expected.
