Job Purpose
This role is designed to enhance the effectiveness of agriculture-related data systems within Syria. The primary objective is to strengthen information management, reporting capabilities, and the overall process of evidence-based decision-making. By improving these critical areas, the position will contribute to more informed strategies and interventions in the agricultural sector, ultimately supporting the FAO's mission in the country and its contribution to sustainable agrifood systems.
Responsibilities
The Data and Information Systems Specialist will be responsible for mapping and assessing existing data systems, and developing robust data management and information-sharing protocols. This includes supporting the establishment of effective reporting and tracking systems, and conducting comprehensive data analysis and visualization. The role involves providing technical support and training on data systems to FAO national staff and the Ministry of Agriculture. Key tasks include developing agriculture databases and dashboards for core statistics (e.g., crop yield, livestock census, market prices), contributing to the Syrian Agricultural Investment Map (SAIM), and developing data collection and reporting templates. Ensuring data quality assurance, standardization, and facilitating linkages with research institutions are also crucial. The specialist will analyze sector performance indicators and support the production of analytical and statistical reports.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in data management and information systems is required. This experience should align with the educational background in fields such as information systems, statistics, agricultural economics, GIS, or data science.
Skills
Essential skills include strong data analysis and database management capabilities, experience with statistical and data visualization tools, and proficiency in developing dashboards and reporting systems. The ability to develop data protocols and templates, coupled with good communication and training skills, is vital. Familiarity with GIS and statistical software is desirable. Experience working with UN Agencies and knowledge of FAO systems and standards are preferred. Arabic language proficiency is an added advantage.
