Associate Legal Officer
Organizational Context
The Patents and Treaties Law Section (PTLS) facilitates international discourse on patent law, administers patent treaties, and supports the progressive development of the international patent system. It provides secretariat services for the Standing Committee on the Law of Patents (SCP) and engages in awareness-raising, education, and capacity building on patent law and policy, assisting Member States in developing legislative frameworks.
Job Purpose
The Associate Legal Officer advances balanced and forward-looking international legal frameworks for patents, utility models, trade secrets, and technology. Through rigorous legal research, analysis, and collaboration on key initiatives, this role supports informed decision-making by Member States. It aims to strengthen the effectiveness, coherence, and accessibility of intellectual property systems within a rapidly evolving technological landscape, ensuring that legal frameworks keep pace with innovation and global needs.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will conduct research on various legal topics, perform comparative analyses of national/regional legislations, and draft working documents for WIPO committees, guides, and legal opinions. They will assist in organizing and implementing training, awareness-raising activities, seminars, and workshops, particularly concerning patents, trade secrets, and the intersection of IP law and technology. The role involves participating as a member of the Secretariat for WIPO technical committees, drafting summary records, and attending conferences. Additionally, the incumbent will respond to general correspondence and inquiries, provide advice on patent, utility model, trade secret, and layout design law, and perform other related duties as required.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of relevant professional experience in intellectual property law practice, either in the public or private sector, is required. Experience specifically in patent law and practice is desirable.
Skills
Essential skills include the ability to conduct legal research and analysis, draft legal texts clearly, and communicate complex legal issues effectively. Strong organizational skills, proficiency in digital tools and AI applications, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills for multicultural environments are also required. Commitment to continuous learning and adopting emerging technologies is crucial.
