The IP and Innovation Ecosystems Sector (IES) helps Member States develop IP and innovation ecosystems, supporting enterprises in IP commercialization and growth. Within IES, the Internet Dispute Resolution Section of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center is a global leader in administering disputes under policies like the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). It manages various aspects of the Internet Domain Name System (DNS) and related policy developments.
Job Purpose
The Associate Legal Officer supports the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center's Internet Dispute Resolution Section in resolving global Internet domain name disputes. This involves reviewing panel decisions to ensure legal and jurisprudential consistency, thereby upholding the integrity of WIPO's dispute resolution mechanisms. The role also entails coordinating various aspects of case administration, including assigning and reviewing work of Legal Case Managers, and exploring the integration of IT solutions for enhanced efficiency. Furthermore, the incumbent contributes to WIPO's leadership in digital intellectual property protection by providing input for policy development, evaluating cases for panelist selection, and maintaining relations with users and registrars. This position is crucial for maintaining WIPO's global standing in Internet dispute resolution and adapting to evolving digital IP challenges.
Responsibilities
The Associate Legal Officer will contribute to the development and implementation of Internet dispute resolution policies. Key duties include assigning and reviewing the work of Legal Case Managers, providing guidance on case management issues, and exploring the integration of IT, including AI, to enhance legal case administration and review processes. The incumbent will review panel decisions to ensure legal and jurisprudential consistency, providing input for WIPO's public legal resources like the WIPO Overview. This role involves evaluating cases and proposing WIPO panelists to Senior Legal Officers based on specific case requirements. Furthermore, the officer will maintain relations and provide information to users, organizations, and registrars on Internet dispute resolution and operational matters. They will represent WIPO at national and international meetings, participate in and deliver training, seminars, and presentations on relevant topics. Continuous legal research on Internet dispute resolution developments is essential to maintain and advance WIPO's role in this field. The incumbent will also promote and contribute to the use of WIPO Global IP Services and undertake other related duties as required.
Work Experience
At least three years of relevant professional experience is essential, specifically in intellectual property law or alternative dispute resolution. This experience should have been gained within a law firm, legal department, or agency.

Essential skills include strong knowledge of dispute resolution policies and procedures, and an understanding of IT's role in these processes. The role requires excellent analytical, problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills, alongside superior written and oral communication.
