The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health. This Public Health Officer position, at the P2 level, is part of the WP/DPC Health Promotion, Disease Prevention and Control department. Job Purpose
The purpose of this Public Health Officer position is to provide essential support for the implementation, analysis, and monitoring of public health programs and activities within the WHO. The incumbent will contribute technical expertise to WHO teams and national counterparts across various public health domains, including health promotion, disease prevention, surveillance, emergency preparedness and response, and health systems strengthening. This role is crucial for advancing public health initiatives and ensuring effective program delivery and outcomes in alignment with WHO's mandate. The position aims to enhance the capacity of health systems and contribute to the development and execution of public health policies and strategies.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include conducting in-depth analysis and research on public health topics to inform program development. The role involves contributing to the drafting of public health guidelines and providing input for action plans related to public health policies and health systems. Support will be provided for monitoring work plans and budgets, including resource mobilization efforts and follow-up on planned activities. Analyzing best practices in public health and health systems and reporting findings is also a core duty. The incumbent will participate in capacity-building initiatives for public health systems, management, and financing, as well as engage in community outreach for health-care network extension. Additionally, the role requires contributing to public health reports and serving as a focal point for public health topics within the area of work, performing all other related duties as assigned.
Work Experience
Essential: At least two years of professional, internship, research, or volunteer experience in public health activities, including experience in conducting analysis and research on public health topics. Desirable: Experience working with government agencies and/or local ministries of health, and experience with WHO, UN agencies, or other international organizations.
