Organizational Context
The Department of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) at WHO aims to prevent and mitigate drug-resistant infections globally, aligning with the Global Action Plan on AMR and SDGs. Job Purpose
The purpose of this role is to provide strategic leadership and direction for the Department of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) at WHO. This involves developing, promoting, and monitoring global policies and strategies to combat drug-resistant infections, in line with the Global Action Plan on AMR and Sustainable Development Goals. The role requires coordinating with international agencies, fostering multisectoral engagement across the One Health spectrum, and supporting the development and implementation of National Action Plans. Key contributions include enhancing country-level capacity, leading global surveillance efforts, and monitoring progress towards global targets to mitigate the impact of antimicrobial resistance worldwide.
Responsibilities
Ensures effective direction, management, and accountability of the AMR Department, optimizing resources and deliverables. Leads the articulation and operationalization of a clear departmental vision aligned with organizational strategy, driving measurable results. Develops and implements evidence-based policies and strategies for global, regional, and country-level programs. Provides high-level technical advice to management, positioning WHO as a leader in AMR. Manages monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of key performance indicators. Serves as a scientific and technical reference point among UN agencies and other key players. Builds and strengthens partnerships with Member States, international organizations, and research institutions. Represents the department in global forums to advance AMR priorities. Fosters cross-departmental collaboration and strengthens institutional coherence across WHO levels. Champions collective action through resource mobilization and knowledge sharing.
Work Experience
Essential: Minimum 15 years of professional experience in Antimicrobial Resistance management or related areas. Experience in senior-level advisory roles, managing human and financial resources, and developing policies/strategies. Demonstrated international experience and a track record of high-level political advocacy. Desirable: PhD with relevant publications, experience at multiple organizational levels, and within a UN agency.
