Within UNESCO's Science Sector, The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS) fosters international cooperation in science for peace and sustainable development. Job Purpose
The Executive Director, under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Science and the direct supervision of the TWAS Steering Committee and Council, leads the Academy to fulfill its mandate of promoting scientific excellence for sustainable development in the Global South, contributing to the 2030 Agenda. The role involves providing strategic direction to advance scientific research in developing countries, encouraging North-South and South-South cooperation among individuals and academic centers, and positioning TWAS as a global hub for ideas and foresight. This includes developing innovative proposals for public policy, bridging research, policy, and practice.
Responsibilities
The Executive Director is responsible for the intellectual, strategic, and operational leadership of the development, management, planning, and execution of the Academy's international scientific cooperation programs. This is to be done in accordance with UNESCO's policies and procedures and within the framework of the approved Programme and Budget (C/5). Key responsibilities include coordinating with associated organizations like OWSD and IAP, ensuring effective internal control and supervision of TWAS staff in program implementation, preparing annual programs, reports, action plans, and budget projections for governing bodies and donors. The role also involves creating synergies with UNESCO's science programs, developing innovative approaches for South-South cooperation, establishing new scientific networks, and leading strategic resource mobilization efforts. The Executive Director will also serve as the Secretary for TWAS Steering Committee and Council meetings.
Work Experience
A minimum of 15 years of professional experience at increasing levels of responsibility in scientific research and administration, including regional and/or international assignments. Proven leadership skills in a scientific environment, experience in human and financial resource management, successful fundraising, and experience in international relations and multilateral cooperation are essential.

Fluency in English is required, with knowledge of other official UNESCO languages being an asset.
