Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, aims to provide scientists from developing countries with essential continuing education and skills for productive careers. For over 50 years, ICTP has been instrumental in preventing scientific brain drain from developing nations and advancing scientific expertise globally. It is a major force in fostering scientific development worldwide.
Job Purpose
The Associate Research Scientist (Applied AI) will provide crucial technical expertise in applied artificial intelligence within the International Consortium for Scientific Computing (ICOMP) initiative. This role supports ICTP research scientists in integrating AI methods into their research software and conducting research in ICOMP-related fields. The incumbent will also contribute significantly to ICTP's training programs, including the Master in High-Performance Computing (MHPC). This position is key to advancing computational sciences globally and supporting the scientific community at ICTP.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will undertake frontline research in Applied AI, contributing to the development and implementation of research projects and managing individual research grants. They will provide guidance and mentoring to students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting researchers, serving as a scientific supervisor as needed, and reporting research findings at international meetings. Responsibilities also include contributing to ICTP programs by establishing collaborations with scientists from developing countries, identifying their AI-related needs, and formulating recommendations. Organizing and contributing to ICTP seminars, schools, and workshops in Applied AI is essential. Furthermore, the role involves providing advanced technical support on Applied AI to ICTP scientists and the broader scientific community, assisting with the efficient deployment of AI workflows, and collaborating on research grant proposals, particularly concerning large-scale data analysis and machine learning methods.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of relevant professional experience in Applied AI and advanced parallel programming is necessary. Experience in an international setting, familiarity with large-scale computational infrastructures, and experience within a scientific organization or educational institute are highly desirable.
