Organizational Context

This position is within the Finance Section of the Financial Resources Management Service at the United Nations Office at Geneva. The Associate Accountant will report to the Chief of Unit, contributing to the Division of Administration's financial operations.

Job Purpose

The Associate Accountant is responsible for reviewing, approving, reconciling, and processing a variety of accounting transactions, including billing and deposit applications. This role ensures compliance with UN Financial Regulations and Rules, verifies obligations and expenditures, and reconciles accounts. The position also involves evaluating financial reports, assisting with consolidated accounts and year-end financial statements, and maintaining accurate accounting and internal control systems. Additionally, the Associate Accountant supports accounting system administration, researches audit findings, and may supervise staff, performing other related duties as required to support the financial operations of the UN Office at Geneva.

Responsibilities

Review, approve, reconcile, and process accounting transactions, including billing and deposit applications. Confirm that obligations and expenditures for services, facilities, supplies, equipment, and personnel comply with UN Financial Regulations, Rules, appropriations, and allotments. Reconcile IOV and suspense accounts, preparing adjusting entries for financial statements. Evaluate financial reports from clients to identify anomalies and initiate corrective actions. Assist in reviewing consolidated Headquarters and field accounts. Support the preparation of UN year-end financial statements. Ensure the functionality of accurate accounting, reporting, and internal control systems. Collaborate with the Systems Support Section on accounting system installation and administration. Research and analyze information to respond to audit findings. Supervise staff as needed. Perform other related duties.

Work Experience

No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme (YPP) Examination. Experience in accounting, finance, or budget is desirable. Proficiency in Excel, including advanced functions and managing complex data sets, is also desirable.
