Organizational Context

This position is within the Office of the Director-General at the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG). The role reports directly to the Chief of the Political Affairs and Partnerships Section, contributing to the strategic operations and diplomatic engagements managed by the Director-General's office.

Job Purpose

The Associate Political Affairs Officer will support the Office of the Director-General by monitoring, researching, and analyzing political and security developments in assigned areas. This involves contributing to policy formulation, strategy development, and decision-making through data analysis and identifying emerging issues. The role also entails drafting various documents, supporting strategic communications, and assisting in the planning and coordination of programmatic activities, high-level events, and diplomatic engagements. Furthermore, the position will aid in outreach, partnership-building, promoting organizational learning, and disseminating best practices and policy guidance to align with strategic priorities.

Responsibilities

Monitor, research, and analyze political and security developments, identifying trends and emerging issues using data analytics. Draft diverse documents, including analytical reports, briefing notes, talking points, and correspondence. Support strategic communications by preparing speeches, press releases, and publications. Coordinate and organize programmatic activities, high-level events, and diplomatic engagements. Assist in outreach and partnership-building initiatives. Facilitate organizational learning by collecting and disseminating lessons learned and best practices. Develop and review guidance and policy to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution, or related fields is required. Desirable experience includes policy advice, drafting for high-level officials, preparing meeting materials, and organizing international events.
