Organizational Context
This position is within the United Nations Operations and Crisis Centre (UNOCC), a multi-party entity providing global situational awareness and crisis management. The UNOCC operates under the Executive Office of the Secretary-General and the Department of Peace Operations, receiving strategic oversight from a Client Board. The role is operationally positioned under the Office of Coordination and Shared Services.
Job Purpose
The Associate Political Affairs Officer will monitor political, security, humanitarian, and human rights developments in various settings, including peacekeeping and peace-building operations. The role involves gathering and interpreting information from diverse sources, tracking security situations, and serving as a primary contact point for missions at Headquarters, especially during crises. This position supports crisis management and response by drafting situational reports, preparing briefings, and facilitating communication between Headquarters, field entities, and Permanent Missions. The incumbent will also contribute to special reports and provide essential information linkage during emergencies, operating within a 24/7 Watch Room environment.
Responsibilities
Monitor political, security, humanitarian, and human rights developments in peacekeeping, peace-building, and special political mission settings. Gather and interpret information from open-source media, field reports, and member states. Track security situations in assigned areas and act as a liaison for peacekeeping missions at Headquarters, communicating fast-changing developments. Draft, compile, and edit daily situational awareness reports, supporting crisis management and response. Prepare presentations, briefings, and reports using visual tools. Update maps of UN field missions using cartographic and information systems. Research and draft special reports on political or operational issues. Respond to information requests from senior management, linking with field actors. Facilitate crisis and emergency procedures, including drafting update reports. Perform shifts as part of the 24/7 Watch Room operations, including duty officer roles during silent hours, weekends, and holidays.
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in project/programme management, administration, political science, or international relations is required. Direct experience in crisis management support is also required. Experience in an international operational environment is desirable.
Skills
Strong research, analytical, planning, and organizational skills. Ability to evaluate and synthesize information, identify and solve problems, and work effectively under stress. Proficiency in various research methodologies and sources. Ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships. Client orientation and teamwork are essential. Experience with crisis management and international operations is beneficial.
